VOL 1/10

Dear Serenes

Welcome to our first Serenes Newsletter for 2010. Though it is already February we wish you and yours all the best for the year. By now your memories of Christmas and New Year celebrations are a distant memory and the usual daily routine has reappeared. This is certainly the case for Serendipity as we resumed our weekly practice sessions on January 19.

Kerith was not present for our first practice. Ann had to do double duty that night. However, Kerith wasn’t taking a “sickie”. She had gone to Melbourne where she was honing her conducting techniques at a specialist Summer School for Choral Conductors where Simon Halsey was the major tutor. We are very proud of her as she was placed in the most advanced group and was one of four chosen as a conductor for the concluding concert. We are already feeling the benefit of her hard work and are most grateful for the generosity of both Ann and Kerith. They have many gifts and they share them generously . . . and, for free!

Our December concerts at both Bowral and Bundanoon in December had focussed on “Heavenly Bodies”. One of the pieces “To the Evening Star” was especially composed for the choir by John D’Arcy – thank you, John. We grew to love it and, though it doesn’t feature in our next concert, we’re sure it will appear again.

Our audiences at both performances were very enthusiastic and supportive. Your many comments – some of which have been posted to our website – were much appreciated. It is so encouraging to know that we are able to give pleasure to members of our community.

We would like to thank all those Serenes who gave of their time to help stage the concerts. A special mention needs to be made of choir members Bob Thomas and Sandy Menteith who produced the wonderful slide show of Heavenly Bodies to complement the programme and of Greg Ohm whose notes for each concert are worth keeping for future reference.

You may not be aware that your willingness to buy tickets helps make it possible for the choir to continue. While the Bundanoon Community Association backs us in our endeavours, choral music is quite expensive and copies of each piece need to be purchased for each member of the choir. So, thanks again for your support. We hope we’ll see you at our next concert.

And when is that event? Well, we’re pleased to announce that in March we’ll have “TIMES PAST – A Choral Retrospective” featuring both Serendipity and guest artist and classical guitarist, Mark Williamson. The Bundanoon Concert will be on Saturday, March 20 and the following Sunday March 28, at St Saviour’s Anglican Cathedral in Goulburn. Both concerts will commence at 3 pm. We’ll send you a copy of our flier closer to the event.

In the meantime, all the best
